Insolar is a Brazilian based social business that is dedicated to the promotion and democratization of access to solar energy through the installation of photovoltaic systems in the low-income communities of Rio de Janeiro. Their approach aims to empower local residents to build their own solar infrastructure in a spirit of collaboration and to help communities receive more reliable electricity while saving money on their electricity bills. Beneficiaries of their projects have included schools, day-care centers, local development agencies, health care centers and many more. Through workshops and training of local labor, Insolar has created jobs for community members to work as solar ambassadors and disseminate sustainable energy in the communities, promoting technological empowerment and intersectoral collaboration.
