World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (Kabang Kalikasan ng Pilipinas Foundation Inc.)
Finalist 2017
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines is one of the largest environmental conservation organizations in the country. WWF Philippines has the goal of achieving a low-carbon society and also aims to improve the resilience of low-income communities to the effects of climate change by introducing adaptive technologies that will enable sustainable access to food, water and energy. 11 million Filipinos still rely mainly on kerosene lamps for lighting to gain access to clean energy technologies and 9 million lack access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation. In response, WWF Phiippines launched the Earth Hour Village Project that provides technology transfer by training volunteers from communities to build, operate and maintain new technologies for container farming, rainwater harvesting and distributing and using solar lamps. They have implemented the ‘Lighting Night Landings’ project in the Lagonoy Gulf and helped to install solar-powered lighting systems and centralized charging stations to benefit small-scale tuna fishermen and women.Copyright United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs | Terms of use
